At the start of summer 2006 I became single again after a sixteen year relationship. At first, I had no clue what I was to do...

I have never been much of a dater and the idea of going to bars and clubs to find myself a date was not very appealing to me. I am not a bar person anyway, and - added to my natural shyness - this was not an option.

A colleague and friend of mine, an experienced dater and swinger, made me enthusiastic about online dating. Of course I knew there were dating sites on the Internet, you can hardly miss them when surfing the web, but I always regarded that as an option for losers who could not get a date otherwise...

Boy, was I wrong!

My friend gave me two adult dating sites to check out - I was not looking for a relationship, so an adult dating site was a great place to start - and I did do that the very night he gave me the URLs. One was a Dutch dating site (I am Dutch) called AdultMatch, the other one was the world-renowned Adult FriendFinder dating site, part of the FriendFinder network.

I became a non-paying member of both sites and started my quest. Both sites allowed for extensive searches based on the preferences I entered in the search form. By the way, Adult FriendFinder sports the most comprehensive preference sheet I have seen up until now, appropriately named Cupid.

As a man (sorry, I know my name may confuse many Americans in thinking I am a girl), finding a date on a dating site is a lot more work than it is for a woman. Most, if not all, dating sites have way more men in their database than women, so you have to compete with all those men. As a woman, you can just become a member of an online dating site and men will flock to you, regardless of your looks!

To get the most out of the memberships, I decided to become a paying member of both sites so I could use all tools the sites offered. When you are a free member, you are mostly very restricted in how often you can react to someone's profile. You also get the possibility to narrow down your search even more due to more criteria becoming available once you become a paying member.

It took me about a week of tweaking my profile (in which you tell the world who you are and what you're looking for in a date), manipulating my search preferences and sending out mails and winks to potential dates that I started getting attention. I have the luck that I am not too bad looking (sorry...) and most women I approached who seen my picture were interested in meeting me.

I dated for about three weeks to a month, often had three or four dates in a week, and was able to live out some of my fantasies. I will not go into detail but it was well worth it!!!

At the end of this period I met my new girlfriend and we have been together ever since.

This dating period made me very interested in the world of dating. I know many people are looking for a partner. Others use the online dating services to find an erotic date and are not at all interested in a relationship (I wasn't until I met my girlfriend).

The nice thing about using dating sites is that you know upfront who you are going to meet and what they like. Especially when you work the adult dating sites, you know your date's preferences and they know yours. Are you have a special preference (maybe two girls, an extra man, a couple, a group, BDSM), you can tweak your search so you only get the appropriate profiles that are in for that sort of thing. The world is your oyster!

When I started dating, I had a hard time finding what were the right sites for me, what I should put in my profile, what preferences I could list and etcetera. What I missed was a site where someone would give personal opinions of these dating sites, not influenced by monetary considerations (although I have nothing against making a few bucks for sending people to a site, see my Disclosure Policy below) but just honest reviews.

I found a site in Canada that did that very well, but there was no Dutch site that did that.

Therefore I started my own Dutch language site reviewing Dutch language dating sites. This site is called Dating Op Het Web, translated Dating On The Web.

Going through my statistics however, I found out that a lot of my traffic came from countries outside the Netherlands. Since the site is mostly unreadable for foreign visitors, and since I wanted to give the same quality content and service to visitors outside of the Netherlands as well, I decided on translating the site into English. I did however quickly dismiss that idea at first, given the amount of work involved. At first I created a blog, but that did not fit my way of working. In the end, I decided to do the translation anyway!

My plan is to do the same as I did on my Dutch website, which is reviewing dating websites and writing about it. In principle, this website is a copy of the Dutch site. This time however I will review dating websites from around the world, showing you only the quality ones. Besides that, I will keep a lookout for special offers from quality sites and let you know about it as well.

Yes, the links I give you in the posts (via banners or via text links) might bring in some dough (bills need to be paid…), but that will not interfere with the quality of my reviews (see my Disclosure Policy below). I will not be paid to do a review, not now and not ever. I only write a review for sites I honestly think are worth mentioning to my audience.
